Ranked only below air to breath, water to drink, and food to sustain, is the need for safety. But for tens of millions of people — fathers, mothers, daughters, sons — safety is something merely yearned for. Violence, brutality, bombings, and kidnappings are probably more familiar to refugees than the feeling of comfortability in one’s own bed — if they even have one.

The Stride Of Her Shoes is a multimedia journalism feature that documents the journeys of two young women, Raya and Deyana. Both are Syrian refugees actively pursuing safety and a better life. While their identities and experiences differ greatly from one another, taken together, their stories illustrate the infinite potential of a hopeful woman and the limitless stride of her shoes.
